Adolescence is a period of biopsychosocial changes that imply a higher risk for the development of some mental disorders and suicidal ideation. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of suicidal ideation in adolescents from public and private schools in a city in the north of the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The study included 117 adolescents aged 13 to 17 years (M = 15.14; SD = 1.06), 71% girls, who attended elementary or high school. A sociodemographic questionnaire and the Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation (BSI) were used. Descriptive analyses indicated that 48.71% (n = 57) of adolescents had suicidal ideation. Mann-Whitney U test indicated higher BSI score in girls, adolescents undergoing psychological and psychiatric treatment, and those with a health problem and using psychiatric medication. It is highlighted the importance of working on this theme in schools as a prevention tool and promoting assistance to those in need.
