This article presents the experiences of gender and sexuality in the Public Jail of Porto Alegre, based on both participant observation in a prison wing created specifically for trans, transvestites, homosexuals and their couples, and narrative interviews with a person arrested there. In a political panorama that combines various forms of exercise of power, especially of the prison institution and of the militancy, the agencies and protagonists that make up the singularity of the experiences of gender and sexuality of people in deprivation of liberty in the named LGBT Gallery represent the area of tension that is the focus of study here. We use assumptions of Grounded Theory as a way of signalizing elements of identity experiences, which are analyzed considering discursive perspectives. The ways of experiencing issues of gender and sexuality in the LGBT Gallery seem to be dynamic, uninterruptedly accommodating in exercises of violence and freedom.
