This paper presents research exploring the hypothesis that Marxism was an important theoretical grounding in the history of Brazilian Community Psychology. The authors highlight the historical development of Community Psychology in Brazil and the main thesis of Marxist theories. Also, a bibliographical survey identified twelve texts of Community Psychology published in the 1980s that showed: the relationship with Marxist theory; debates about the social function of Psychology; historical-social concept of the individual; and the presence of the Freirean concept of conscientization. The manuscript argues that the bibliographical survey indicates: the residual presence of Marxism as a theoretical foundation; the importance of Marxist categories to problematize the relationship between Psychology and society; and, the limits of social change projects in Community Psychology.
