Disorders of Sex Development (DSD) are congenital conditions often expressed as genital ambiguity that prevents biological sex identification at birth. Anatomically, sex differentiation is based on the external genital appearance. For Freudian psychoanalysis, the difference results from a complex psychic process. This study discusses two fundamental concepts in DSD: decision making on gender rearing practices and sex differentiation. The approach to DSD as a medical category shows diagnostic methods to support decision making on gender rearing and sex differentiation as a psychoanalytic theory. The importance of subjectivity and the possible articulation between the above-mentioned concepts are also emphasized.
