To foster a theoretical-methodological basis for future investigations to support reflections on professional performance in mental health treatment environments, a biographical study focused on life histories was conducted to understand the relationships that public workers acting in a custody hospital and psychiatric treatment establish with their work. Four professionals from the institution were interviewed and the results were compiled for content analysis in two thematic categories: a) quality of life and well-being at work; b) meaning of work. Positive signs were highlighted regarding the healthy linking investigated in the relationships of people with work permeated by feelings of affection and empathy with the work they develop. On the other hand, the greatest unfavorable factor observed was the institutional duality and its influence on the daily decision making processes.
