This study aims to test, through pathway analysis, a prediction model of variables of functional independence, social support and affects on the life satisfaction of institutionalized older adults. Thirty-four older adults living in four different philanthropic institutions in the city of Rio de Janeiro participated in the study; they answered self-report psychometric instruments that assessed life satisfaction, positive and negative affects, and received, provided and perceived support. The level of independence concerning the basic activities of daily living was also investigated with a secondary informant. Functional independence, types of social support and positive affects positively predicted life satisfaction. Negative affects were negatively associated. Relationships indicate that the investigated constructs provide important insights into how institutionalized older adults evaluate their lives.
