PAGUNG, Larissa Bessert; SILVEIRA, Kelly Ambrósio  e  MOTTA, Alessandra Brunoro. Coping in childhood cancer by family caregivers. Gerais, Rev. Interinst. Psicol. [online]. 2021, vol.14, n.3, e17224.  Epub 20-Jan-2025. ISSN 1983-8220.  https://doi.org/10.36298/gerais202114e17224.

Coping strategies are required from parents and caregivers when dealing with childhood cancer, so family adjustment and support to treatment occur. To analyze coping in caregivers of children with cancer and their relationship with the disease’s variables and treatment, 60 caregivers of children undergoing treatment in a public Children’s Hospital answered instruments on coping (Coping Scale) and sociodemographic and clinical data. Data were submitted to descriptive, statistical and inferential analysis. Adaptive coping presented higher mean value, emphasizing problem solving. Relationships among emotional responses (sadness, fear and anger), and psychological needs and coping categories were found. Coping is differentiated in its type, time and modality of treatment. In conclusion, interventions with caregivers for childhood cancer, focusing on coping, must consider the disease’s characteristics and treatment.
