Children’s behavioral problems are complaints often presented by parents and teachers, which interfere in the child’s ambient and development. Socioeconomic variables and family relations can influence such disorders. The aim of this study was to comparatively investigate these variables in groups of children with and without behavioral problems. A total of 202 children aged between 6 to 11 years old, from public and private schools and their mothers participated in the study. The instruments used were: The Child Behavior Checklist, Parenting Style Inventory, Beck’s Anxiety and Depression Inventory, and Family Climate Inventory. Children with behavioral problems presented significant differences in the variables: maternal mental health, in which family hierarchy presented higher scores than parental style and cohesion. The results showed that families of children with behavioral problems present more symptoms of anxiety and depression, more hierarchy and less affective cohesion.
