Abstract

VIEIRA, Mara Farias Chaves; OLIVEIRA, Maria Liz Cunha de  and  CHARIGLIONE, Isabelle Patriciá Freitas Soares. Profile of couples treated by an assisted reproduction service in Brasília in 2017-2018. Gerais, Rev. Interinst. Psicol. [online]. 2022, vol.15, n.3, e18398.  Epub Jan 20, 2025. ISSN 1983-8220.  https://doi.org/10.36298/gerais202215e18398.

The World Health Organization defines infertility as a disease of the reproductive system characterized by the inability to achieve a pregnancy after 12 months of regular sexual intercourse without contraception. This disease is considered a public health problem today. This study aimed to describe and analyze the sociopsychological profile of couples treated by an assisted reproduction service in the Federal District, Brazil. This is a retrospective, descriptive, observational case series study. Socio-demographic, psychological and health data were collected from the medical records of 130 couples who attended the service from July 2017 to May 2018. The profile of the couples revealed the heterogeneity of this population, although women had a higher prevalence of depressed mood and changes in the mental state, and were more anxious than men. Psychological, social and gender issues should be seen as an important part of infertility treatment.
