This study aims to understand the insight of subjects with affective/mood disorders. We investigated aspects related to the subjects’ perception of their symptoms, monitoring their own modes and introspection regarding the acceptance of the diagnosis. The study has a qualitative bias, by a semi-structured interview and included participants aged over 18 years, of both sexes, enrolled in a psychiatric outpatient clinic in Rio Grande do Sul. The results showed the following categories: “Awareness of the disorder”; “Acceptance of the diagnosis”; “Adherence to treatment”; “Psychoeducation”; “Medication, medicalization and biomedical paradigm” and “Stigma”. Based on these, it became clear that there was a need for new interventions with the patients, by implementing guidelines and care policies related to humanization, the expanded clinic and multiprofessional knowledge, as most of these subjects use medication as the only mean of treatment. Regarding insight, most patients, with the exception of one individual, were able to express the content and experiences related to their diagnosis and to factors of change in their lives, that is, insight became an essential factor for them to better understand the alternatives for their treatment and allowed them to control their life course more effectively
