Abstract

FARIAS, Mariana Gonçalves et al. The Effect of Ambivalent Sexism and Relationship Satisfaction on Susceptibility to Infidelity. Gerais, Rev. Interinst. Psicol. [online]. 2022, vol.15, n.3, e18542.  Epub Jan 20, 2025. ISSN 1983-8220.  https://doi.org/10.36298/gerais202215e18542.

This study evaluated the effect of relationship satisfaction and ambivalent sexism on susceptibility to emotional and sexual infidelity. The sample included 320 participants aged from 18 to 69 years (m = 29.4, SD = 10.6), most participants were females (61.6%) and heterosexual (92%). Participants answered the Inventory of Ambivalent Sexism and scenarios of infidelity, which were arranged to focus on sexual satisfaction, emotional satisfaction, and type of infidelity. The results indicated that the types of satisfaction reduced the participants’ susceptibility to infidelity and that individuals who scored low on ambivalent sexism were more susceptible to infidelity. These results corroborate previous studies that found that sexual satisfaction does not predict sexual infidelity and that levels of satisfaction are strongly related to emotional infidelity.
