Abstract

MEDEIROS, Nathássia Matias de  and  GERMANO, Idilva Maria Pires. Newspaper O Bond and Female Subjectivity during the Belle Époque in Fortaleza. Gerais, Rev. Interinst. Psicol. [online]. 2023, vol.16, n.1, e18793.  Epub Jan 20, 2025. ISSN 1983-8220.  https://doi.org/10.36298/gerais202316e18793.

This article aims to analyze characteristics, strategies, and functions of the statements on women in the newspaper O Bond, which circulated in Fortaleza during the so-called Belle Époque. The study is based on the Foucaultian analysis of the discourse, discussing its potentials effects of subjectivation. From the analysis made, we observed that it was aimed to produce women who are demure, pure, innocent, virgin, and virtuous, as well as dedicated mothers and wives submissive to their husbands. Regarding the mechanisms of control present in the newspaper, we identified the condemnatory denunciation of behaviors classified as inadequate. Women were advised on how they should behave and relate, promoting an “acceptable” model of women, delineating which feminine characteristics were expected.
