Parental beliefs relate to parents’ understanding of child development and can influence their decision-making and interactions with their child. The main objective of this study was to investigate parental beliefs about Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) by a Systematic Literature Review. Four electronic databases (SciElo, Lilacs, PePSIC, and Index Psi) were searched. Only empirical research articles published in Portuguese over the last 10 years were used in this study. It was concluded that parental beliefs about ASD act as a dynamic and singular process for families, are related to a series of psychosocial factors and have repercussions on parenting practices. The factors that stood out are the symptomatology of the disorder, the child’s features, the way the diagnosis was made, school inclusion, the presence of a social support network and the resilience of the family. The literature reveals that there is a need for health professionals to work on the maintenance of positive beliefs and the adjustment of parents’ plans and expectations, as well as on the development of parents’ ability to identify their children’s skills, which generates gains for autistic people and their families.
