Abstract

MAIA, Bruna Bortolozzi  and  OKAMOTO, Mary Yoko. Psychoanalytic Considerations on Narcissism and Parenting in the Contemporary Context: A Literature Review. Gerais, Rev. Interinst. Psicol. This study, which is the result of an undergraduate research project, aimed to carry out a systematic review of the literature on parental narcissistic investment in children, based on the theoretical framework of psychoanalysis. We started from Freud’s (1914) theory that parents place in their children the narcissism that they received from their own parents and had to renounce, imposing ideals and expectations on their children, in a form of investment that is essential for children’s subjectivation processes. Since families and parenting are influenced by historical transformations and have been increasingly based on consumption, on constant and immediate satisfaction and individualism, we searched the literature for the vicissitudes of this investment in contemporary times. The results demonstrated the fragility of the contemporary father figure and the difficulty adults have in frustrating and imposing the prohibitions of culture, which can lead to consequences in the scope of symbolic transmission
