Abstract

FARIA, Nicole Costa  and  PAIVA, Fernando Santana de. Mental Health and Violence Against Women: Reflections from a Case Study. Gerais, Rev. Interinst. Psicol. [online]. 2023, vol.16, n.3, e20290.  Epub Jan 20, 2025. ISSN 1983-8220.  https://doi.org/10.36298/gerais202316e20290.

This study aims to discuss experiences of violence against women and its effects on mental health. Violence against women, understood as experiences of subjection and control resulting from patriarchal gender relations, culminates in psychosocial suffering for the women involved and affects their mental health. This is a qualitative study in the form of a case study. Data were collected in a Psychosocial Care Center (CAPS) during the psychological treatment of a patient. An interview based on the life history method was also conducted. Violence has permeated the subject’s life since her childhood, in many areas (family, work, marriage), contributing to her mental illness. Thus, the article advocates a professional practice committed to fighting the naturalization of gender relations and the daily violence experienced by women in the context of mental health care.

Keywords : mental health; psychosocial care; violence against women.
