This article seeks to trace a path in the field of aesthetics insofar as, in its (dis)encounters with psychoanalysis, it transgresses the metaphysical conceptions centered on the Beautiful. It begins by presenting some of the debates that constitute aesthetics as a domain of knowledge. Then, it highlights an important rupture in this field, introduced by Freud’s The Uncanny (1919). In such article, aesthetics is understood not only as a doctrine of the Beautiful, but also as a theory of the different qualities of feeling. As an unfolding of this founding text, we explored the work of some psychoanalysts, mainly from the Lacanian field, who brought different theoretical developments regarding aesthetics, such as the “aesthetics of desire” and the “aesthetics of emptiness.” Inspired by these readings, we argue that a psychoanalytic aesthetic is possible due to the strangeness, the experience of falling from the object to the cut in the images. Therefore, the gaze breaks out producing a crack that allows us to glimpse our condition of non-being. From this perspective, the gaze in psychoanalysis, in line with Lacan, comes to the foreground and is the driving force behind an aesthetic that goes beyond the Beautiful.
