Although scarce, studies on the mental health of adolescents in Brazil and in the world show the increase in psychological distress in this population and the urgency to invest in public policies that acknowledge their specificities. In this sense, participatory methodologies have been considered powerful, since they consider the voice of adolescents in the production of knowledge about themselves. This study aimed to identify and analyze reports of participatory research with adolescents in the field of Mental Health. A systematic literature review was performed, searching for articles published from 2008 to 2018 in the Scopus, SciELO, and PubMed databases. In total, 12 articles were selected, one of which evaluating the adopted participatory methodological process and the others used participatory research to achieve objectives related to the development of intervention programs based on valuing adolescents’ expression. Adolescents actively participated in the process of producing and analyzing research data in only three studies. Participation only in data production was more common. Results showed that, although challenging, participatory research is powerful for advancing the production of significant knowledge about adolescence in the context of mental health, and its use is recommended.
