Abstract

LAMEGO, Matheus Maciel  and  BASSANI, Fernanda. Psychic Suffering among Police Officers: a Study in Civil Police Force of Rio Grande do Sul. Rev. Psicol., Organ. Trab. [online]. 2022, vol.22, n.3, pp.2144-2152.  Epub Nov 29, 2024. ISSN 1984-6657.  https://doi.org/10.5935/rpot/2022.3.22973.

The article presents results of research carried out at the Civil Police Health Division of Rio Grande do Sul, based on the analysis of 543 screening forms carried out between 2015 and 2020. The objective is to understand the main reasons that lead police officers to start mental health treatment. The problematization of the data was based on the concept of “psychic suffering” by Dejours, on the notion of “police culture” by Monjardet and on the assumptions of institutional psychology. It was observed that it is female police officers who, proportionately, seek care the most; that the police begin psychological suffering in the first years of entry; and that the reasons expressed that led them to seek care are conflicts in marital relationships, depressive and psychosomatic symptoms, and accidents at work. The importance of reinforcing the records of attendances and their consequences in police health institutions is highlighted, in order to statistically support research, interventions, and public policies aimed at this population.

Keywords : police; public administration; suffering.
