The amount of elderly people in Brazil has significantly increased, featuring an aging population process. In Western society aging brings biological, psychosocial, economic and political changes, felted by the old people as a loss. Since the 80s, with the "boom" of the elderly population, it has become necessary a closer look in order to understand the phenomenon. It is in this context that the Long Term Shelter for Older People has being set up as a sensitive topic due to its importance as an alternative social support to provide care to older people. This study aimed to identify necessities for emotional care old people living in Long Term Shelter and reflect about appropriate interventions in this context. Adopted a qualitative approach as a methodological perspective, by analyzing the narrative of the subject, through a phenomenological and existential look at the events. Two elderly residents were interviewed in a long-term institution. The physical demands of the elderly were met, but in relation to psychological, there was a gap in the absence of activities that could provide development, integration, and psychological well-being. The interventions proposed to the elderlies indicated different adaptations for recovery of multiple possibilities of existence, valuing individuality and rediscovery of skills and abilities, and reconstructing new social roles and solids for a more healthy and harmonious existence ties.
