This theoretical article aimed to understand the personality development of children who have suffered sexual abuse in childhood, in the light of Carl Rogers’ Personality Theory. As a methodological and illustrative strategy, a fictional narrative was used, constructed from the experience of one of the authors in dealing with this public. The following significant elements of the experience were discussed: affective ambiguity, play and shared secrecy, the development of a child’s perception of the world, the process of incongruence, the victim’s sense of responsibility for a sibling and the psychotherapeutic relationship. It was concluded that situations of violence have a significant impact on personality development; however, relationships that are facilitating and devoid of threats can make it easier to resignify experiences and resume emotional development. It is essential that further research is carried out to develop this understanding of sexual abuse and the role of psychologists in dealing with this phenomenon.
