Abstract

FONSECA, Ana Carolina de Souza  and  MARIN, Angela Helena. Self-Injury in Brazil: Characterization of Reported Cases Between 2009 and 2021. Rev. Psicol. Saúde [online]. 2022, vol.14, n.3, pp.131-146.  Epub July 08, 2024. ISSN 2177-093X.  https://doi.org/10.20435/pssa.v14i3.2005.

Self-injury is a public health problem due to its high incidence and resulting damages. The notification of this conduct occurs through the Surveillance System for Violence and Accidents (VIVA), which is part of the Notifiable Disease Information System (SINAN). The aim of this study was to characterize the cases reported in Brazil from the SINAN records corresponding to the period from 2009 to 2021. Descriptive analyzes indicated an increase in records in Brazil, mainly referring to females, aged between 15 and 29 years, white and with incomplete elementary school or complete high school. The acts occurred mostly in the residence and involved more than one episode. The importance of evaluating the characteristics of self-directed violence is emphasized in order to identify risk and protective factors associated with the phenomenon for the design of actions and public policies.

Keywords : self-injurious behavior; health information systems; public health.
