This article aims to understand the subjective repercussions of hemodialysis, from diagnosis to treatment, as well as the implications in the lives of individuals with chronic kidney disease (CKD). It is a qualitative study, with an exploratory-descriptive character, supported by the IRaMuTeQ software for textual corpus analysis using Hierarchical Descending Classification (HDC) analysis. The study was conducted in a teaching hospital in the countryside of Ceará, Brazil. The sample consisted of eight individuals undergoing hemodialysis treatment, with an average age of 45.62 years and an average duration of hemodialysis treatment of 3.25 years, through semi-structured individual interviews. After analysis, two categories emerged: receiving the CKD diagnosis and “spending hours connected to the machine”; subjective repercussions of a new condition. The reports highlight very individualized time management regarding the recognition of physical symptoms, seeking care, and reacting to the disease. The research revealed that undergoing hemodialysis entails real bodily changes. It also indicated the symbolic representation of hemodialysis as a life that imposes new experiences and feelings; that establishes new ways of living subjectively and socially; that dictates dietary limitations and restrictions. The interviewees expressed feelings such as fear, doubts, and insecurity present in this clinical condition.
