Introduction: this paper discusses the sense and meaning that children with cancer have for primary health care professionals. Method: clinical-qualitative research, in which individual interviews with open questions were carried out with four professionals working in primary health care in Bahia municipalities. Results and discussions: the analysis categories were identified a posteriori: affection mobilized by the child with cancer and the conflicts generated in this meeting; functioning of the public health system: difficulties and potential; and forms of resolution for professional autonomy. The professionals reported: insecurity in dealing with the child with cancer; sadness, hopelessness, grief, and anguish; emotional unpreparedness; impotence to comply with the referral, the continuity of care and the integration of care. Conclusion: the interviewees did not want to know and go deeper into childhood cancer, but also to discuss and reflect on children with cancer assisted by primary care.
