This study investigates the difficulties faced by nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic. An exploratory, descriptive, and qualitative study was accomplished based on the clinical-qualitative method. The data were collected through a semi structured interview with 6 nurses who worked at a First Aid Unit which was turned into a COVID ICU during the pandemic. The method used to analyze the data was the thematic content analysis. As difficulties, the interviewers highlighted structural readjustment; availability and quality of material and human resources; constant protocol and flow changes; and the need for training and qualification. Aside from that, there is work and role overload, as well as professional burnout, since the nurses had to take on the work from the multi professional team. Beyond that, the limits of the technoscientific knowledge on the virus evolution made them face the finitude of life, bringing forward feelings of despair and helplessness. As final considerations, it becomes evident that the changes brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic impacted the work of nurses, which entailed consequences on their health, as well as on patient care.
