Stress affects many health professionals. Social skills (SS) are among the stress protection factors, which contribute to satisfactory interpersonal relationships and to achieving a better quality of life. This study aimed to analyze the relation between social skills and stress in health professionals in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a highly complex hospital in São Luís, Maranhão. With a quantitative approach and cross-sectional, descriptive, and correlational design, 62 professionals answered the Individual Characterization Protocol, the Stress Symptoms Inventory, and the Social Skills Inventory. Descriptive and, later, inferential statistical analyzes were performed: bivariate correlation. The results indicate that: 1) professionals are affected by stress at different stages and 2) have a good SS repertoire; and 3) although there are no significant correlations between the SS repertoire and stress, correlations were found between both with sociodemographic and clinical variables. This study both contributes to the expansion of the study in the field of SS and advances in the perspective of care with health professionals, thus aligning itself with the Humanization Policy of the Brazilian National Health Service (SUS).
