Introduction:
During the Covid-19 pandemic, the occurrence of psychosocial disorders and weight changes was observed in populations. Therefore, the aim was to evaluate the association between mental health symptoms and perception of weight change during the COVID-19 pandemic in adults from the municipality of Siderópolis, located in the south of Santa Catarina.
Methods:
Population-based cross-sectional study carried out with individuals aged 18 years or over. The perception of weight change (decrease or increase) was the outcome, and the presence of mental health symptoms was the exposure. Adjusted Poisson regression was used to assess the association with its results being express as prevalence ratio (PR).
Results:
609 individuals were studied, of which 66.5% reported mental health symptoms, 26,4% increase, and 16,7% decrease in weight. Individuals with mental health symptoms had a 55% higher prevalence of perceived weight gain (95%CI 1.34-2.55), compared to those without symptoms. No association with weight loss was observed.
Conclusion:
The development of health strategies that consider food as an influencing factor in mental health, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, is essential for the population.
