COSTA, Anatália Gomes Duarte e MACHADO, Flávia Christiane de Azevedo. Languishing in Public Servants of the Department of Health of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. Rev. Psicol. Saúde [online]. 2024, vol.16, e16172433. Epub 03-Fev-2025. ISSN 2177-093X. https://doi.org/10.20435/pssa.v15i1.2433.
During the COVID pandemic, there was a rise in terms such as languishing (an emotional state between depression and anxiety, translated as deep apathy). Therefore, this sectional study (May to October 2022) aims to analyze the mental health of employees of the Department of Health of Rio Grande do Norte, RN, Brazil, using the modified Short Continuous Mental Health Form (MHC), which measures the frequency of languishing and analyze the association, using Pearson’s Chi-Square test, between languishing x socioeconomic profile and languishing x work characteristics during the COVID-19 period. To this end, a sample of 88 employees (estimated by N=974, confidence level 95%, margin of error 10%) of the Department of Health of RN in 2022 was composed. As a result, an increase in demand for activities was identified in the period critical of COVID-19, according to 80.7% of respondents; 65.9% reported an episode of contamination. The main difficulties in the work were: remote nature, physical structure, and social distancing. Age and stocking time were significantly associated with languishing; 51.2% of the sample presented moderate/languishing mental health, requiring promotion (moderate) and recovery (languishing) actions.
