Increased access to higher education created a context for problematizing the experience in this space, highlighting the difficulties identified by students so that ways of coping can be known and systematized. This study aimed to identify and understand the positions take of academics regarding the difficulties encountered in academic life. To this end, the phenomenological method of empirical research in Psychology was used. Semi-structured online interviews, with a phenomenological orientation, were carried out as a data collection procedure. 13 male and female university students, aged between 19 and 43, participated in the research voluntarily. After being transcribed, the statements were analyzed using the phenomenological method and intentional crossing. Six units of meaning were identified that point to positions of self-confidence and self-discovery, with greater strength than was then imagined, to face the adversities that surround attending higher education, involving religiosity, the meaning experienced in the course and seeking for help as important positions in this process. Thus indicating the presence of human potential in action, the students were able to position themselves in the face of challenges, which seems to point to the presence of a human tendency for growth.
