SOUZA, Vanessa Tavares de e NASCIMENTO, Cidianna Emanuelly Melo do. Suicidal Ideation in Adolescents from a High School in the Interior of Ceará: Possible Motivations. Rev. Psicol. Saúde [online]. 2024, vol.16, e16432755. Epub 04-Abr-2025. ISSN 2177-093X. https://doi.org/10.20435/pssa.v16i1.2755.
The phenomenon of suicide is a global public health problem, drawing attention to an alarming increase in adolescent mortality rates. The objective of this study was to investigate the possible motivations involved in suicidal thoughts in adolescents from a public high school in the city of Tauá, Ceará, Brazil. This study is qualitative and was conducted with six female (four) and male (two) adolescents, aged between 15 and 17 years. The following instruments and techniques were used: 1) Sociodemographic questionnaire; and 2) Semi-structured individual interview conducted in a meeting with each adolescent. In the analysis, the following categories were discussed: “Family relationships: nuances between motivations and protection for suicidal ideation in adolescence”; “Other possible motivations for thoughts of death and suicidal behaviors in the face of ideation”; “Coping mechanisms and protective factors”. In the results, it was observed that family relationships, emotional instability, stressors of daily life, bullying, and previous suicide attempts were considered as propagators for suicidal thoughts to arise by the adolescents interviewed. The findings corroborate the importance of these young people having psychological, family and school support to deal with their issues in a more functional way, acting as protective factors against suicidal ideation.
