STURMER, Giulia; CORREA, Izabella Decknes e MIRANDA, Rodrigo Lopes. The Mental Health of Relatives of People with ASD: A Bibliometric Analysis (2001-2023). Rev. Psicol. Saúde [online]. 2024, vol.16, e16442374. Epub 04-Abr-2025. ISSN 2177-093X. https://doi.org/10.20435/pssa.v16i1.2374.
The autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that has as its main characteristics the persistent loss of reciprocal social communication, on the repetitive and restrictive behaviors, and social interactions. The family and involved caregivers are the first ones to have their own mental health compromised by dealing with individuals with this disorder, possibly leading to stress, depression and anxiety. The study present is characterized as a bibliometric method, that has as its main goal to describe and analyze the scientific production about the mental health of family members of people with ASD, between 2001 and 2023, using three databases, according to seven descriptors. The results indicate a low number of studies and publications facing this issue, being more recurrent the theme about the mothers’ overload and the diagnosis impact. These studies are necessary for the comprehension of the family dynamic of individuals with ASD and the mental suffering of their caregivers, making it possible to give more attention and care to this group.
