This paper aimed to analyze the mortality rates from suicide in elderly people living in the Paraíba. It was an exploratory, descriptive, and documentary research. Data were collected from the Mortality Information System (SIM) of the Informatics Department of the Brazilian National Health Service (DATASUS) and studied using descriptive statistics. The elderly population in Sertão had the highest risk of deaths from suicide compared to other mesoregions of the state. The highest frequencies were seen in the following groups: male, non-white, 60-69-year-old, little schooling, elderly married men, widowed and single elderly women. The results pointed to an increasing trend in mortality from suicide in the elderly over the years. These expressive numbers of suicides among the elderly highlight the fact that public policies need to give more attention to the needs of the aging population in the Sertão.
