KIENEN, Nádia et al. Incorporating Psychologists in Tobacco Cessation Programs: Basic Behaviors. Rev. Psicol. Saúde [online]. 2024, vol.16, e16212319.  Epub 03-Fev-2025. ISSN 2177-093X.  https://doi.org/10.20435/pssa.v16i1.2319.

Introduction:

Smoking is a public health problem and the leading cause of preventable death.

Aim:

To propose basic behaviors for Psychologists to intervene in tobacco cessation.

Method:

A descriptive documentary qualitative study was conducted, in which various sources of information were consulted. The data were organized into two main categories, consisting of 13 subcategories, and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The organization of behaviors was based on the three intervention stages of intervention to promote cessation.

Results:

562 behaviors were identified, with 78% of them focusing on overall behavioral intervention and 22% focused on cessation. Motivational interviewing was the subcategory with the highest number of behaviors, followed by intervention strategies for quitting tobacco use. The stage with the highest number of identified behaviors was “Developing and promoting adherence to the treatment plan”, followed by “Motivating the client for the cessation process”.

Conclusion:

This systematization provides a basis for the development of manuals and training programs for Psychologists to intervene in tobacco cessation.
