Introduction:

The HIV diagnosis is still considered bad news due to its possibly deleterious impact on quality of life. The study aimed to investigate the relationship between the variables quality of life (QoL), coping strategies and sexuality of people with HIV, followed at an infectious diseases clinic in Goiânia, GO.

Method:

Observational and cross-sectional study; 150 people living with HIV participated, 98 (65.66%) male, aged between 19 and 75 years (M=39; SD=12.286), using therapy antiretroviral. Instruments validated for the Brazilian population were used in face-to-face collection. Descriptive and inferential analyzes were performed.

Results:

The participants' highest average score in the QoL dimensions was in relation to general perception, with a significant difference for females. The coping strategies that obtained the highest total averages were acceptance, active coping and religion. Discussion: People with a higher perception of QOL use more adaptive coping strategies, while the group with lower QOL uses more avoidant strategies.

Conclusion:

Sexuality and coping strategies influence the perception of QoL in people living with HIV, based on the results of the present study.
