The COVID-19 pandemic and social distancing measures have imposed changes that negatively impacted the mental health of university men, favoring the use of psychoactive substance (PS). This is a quantitative and exploratory research aimed at verifying indicators associated with the COVID-19 pandemic and social distancing measures in the initiation of alcohol and other SUD use among male university students from a university community in the Brazilian Midwest. The study included 485 university students who completed a self-administered virtual questionnaire. The results point to associations between belonging to the COVID-19 risk group and the initiation of the use of legal substances, such as alcohol and tobacco. In addition, was associated it was possible to observe associations between being an undergraduate student and having started using illicit substances during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results also draw attention to the need to consider the process of social construction of masculinities and its implications on PS use.
