Abstract

ZIDAN, Paloma Mendes  and  ROCHA, Raquel Vasques da. Trauma and Narcisic Fragility in Addictions. Analytica [online]. 2014, vol.3, n.5, pp.72-100. ISSN 2316-5197.

This paper's goal is to examine a few questions related to the pathology of addictions. We analyze the issue of drive excess in relation to narcissistc fragility, both topics of particular interest in this pathology. The investigation raises the question, among others, of the subject's dependence on the object, a dependence which in these cases takes on a radical and absolute nature. In the spectrum of this pathology we have included addictions not only to drugs, but to objects such as buying, sex, and gambling. In addictions, the ego tries to respond, however precariously, to the drive's excess, with the purpose of reversing through action its present situation of passivity. This kind of operation leads us to an analysis of the notions of trauma and repetition compulsion, accounting for the paradoxical dimension of the mode of defense used therein. It is a search for a passage to activity, which however preservers the dominance of the ego by the object - the object of addiction. We believe the study of Freud's second drive theory can contribute for understanding addiction, as the issues of trauma and drive excess seem to us basic aspects of this pathology. Our intentions stem from a theoretical conception in which the aspect of drive finds its articulation with object relations.

Keywords : Addiction; Narcissism; Drive; Passivity; Alterity.
