Freud pointed to religious doctrines as significant manifestations of cultural heritage. Today, we observed that religious strength does not cease to manifest itself in contemporary narratives. This work, resulting from an experience in residency in health, aimed to analyze how religion is presented in the users suffering narratives who received psychological care in a Basic Health Unit in Maceió, Alagoas. Recording in field diaries, psychological services were qualitatively analyzed using the content analysis method. Users' statements were grouped into three categories: it's not a thing of God; Thank God and hand it over to God. The importance of religion concerning social belonging is highlighted, as well as the first and last resort to avoid suffering. At the same time, the search for psychological care refers to the limits of religious discourse as the only support for suffering and helplessness, aspects discussed in light of the contribution of psychoanalysis.
