Abstract

CARVALHO, Diane Glayce Dos Santos  and  DOURADO, Débora Coutinho Paschoal. Remaining at the University: Meanings Attributed to Work by Retired Professors. Rev. Subj. [online]. 2022, vol.22, n.3, e12525.  Epub Nov 22, 2024. ISSN 2359-0777.  https://doi.org/10.5020/23590777.rs.v22i3.e12525.

Currently, the centrality of work in the individual's life is noticeable, just as we find older workers in organizations. Thus, the study sought to understand the meanings attributed to work by retired teachers who remain active in a federal public university, in the light of the Psychodynamics of Work. The study was qualitative and with the method of life stories, through eleven episodic interviews with retired teachers, working voluntarily, in the master's and doctoral programs, focusing on their professional trajectories. Thematic content analysis revealed that teachers attribute meaning to work because they appreciate their profession and contribute to the development of the institution and society. The experiences of pleasure lie in the recognition of students' work and development. Suffering is expressed in difficulties with working conditions and conflicts between prescribed and real work. Defense strategies emerged in the testimonies and most participants reported facing the difficulties that arise at work.

Keywords : sense of work; retired teachers; psychodynamics of work.
