This issue of the São Paulo Academy of Psychology (APA) Bulletin begins with a posthumous tribute to the two co-editors who left us this year: Professor Vera Maria Barros de Oliveira (1937-2022) and Professor Aidyl Macedo de Queiroz Pérez-Ramos (1925-2022). A deep sadness permeates this Editorial, as the death, one after the other, of two editors, separated by such a short time (Professor Vera left us in August and Professor Aidyl in September), leaves an inerasable mark not only on the Bulletin of the Academy itself, but also in all of us who shared the extraordinary academic and personal life of each of these professors.
Prof. Vera, PhD in School and Human Development Psychology at the University of São Paulo (USP), Associate Professor in Social and Work Psychology at USP, had a brilliant career until her departure. Just a day before her death, she spoke to me, with great enthusiasm, about the article she was writing at the invitation of an American magazine. She had already published this year two very important articles in international journals. Vera was steadfast in her motivation to leave something more in her field of work. A tireless go-getter, she was always looking for ways to dedicate herself to this Bulletin and to the São Paulo Academy of Psychology, where she held Chair number 35, “Elza Barra”, since 2001, and was also Director, in the position of General Secretary, until this year. She had been one of the editors of the Bulletin since 2015, actively working in every edition with a dynamic and influential attitude. She was Full Professor of Health Psychology at the Methodist University of São Paulo, Faculty of Health Sciences (1994-2012), was a member of the “Toy-Learning and Health” Working Group of ANPEPP, as well as President of the Brazilian Association of Toy Libraries. With all her dynamism, Vera was also a corresponding member of the International Association of Toy Libraries. The central axis of her research and publications was the study of the formation and use of semiotic manifestations, with a focus on playing, on the healthy development of sociocultural identity. Vera had numerous publications on “Playing and Symbolic Processes” in the form of books and scientific articles, mainly with regard to “The Right to Play (from theory to practice)” and the improvement of children’s integral health.
She mentored dozens of dissertations and theses, organized numerous scientific events, always maintaining an enviable level of energy and disposition. Above all, Vera was a humble, generous person, always willing to collaborate with colleagues and friends. She was cheerful and made us happy. Al is left is our love, as well as the legacy she left for this Bulletin and for Psychology in Brazil.
Professor Aidyl Macedo de Queiroz Pérez-Ramos, aged 96, remained alert and active throughout her life. She was an active member of the São Paulo Academy of Pstchology, holder of Chair number 30 of Geraldo Paula Souza, and had been President of the APP for several terms. Dr. Aidyl promptly participated in the APP Board meetings and was very participative in all the decisions of the Bulletin, of which she was one of the editors, and of the APP itself, of which she was Past President. She had been one of the editors of the Bulletin for exactly 20 years, making a vibrant effort to ensure that this journal always comes out on time, which we are proud to say that it has always happened and continues to be. Her trajectory included improvement in computing, in 1986 at the Apple Institute, when computers were still little used, already presenting a deep interest in self-development. She received degrees in Education and Psychology, a doctorate in Clinical Psychology, medical residency and specialization in Clinical Psychology, and completed her postdoctoral studies at Columbia University in Humanities. She was Full Professor at the Faculty of Philosophy, Sciences and Letters of Assis (Unesp) and invited professor at the Institute of Psychology at the University of São Paulo. Her curriculum is impressive, including being a United Nations Expert in Spain and West Africa and also Visiting Professor at the Universidad Central de Venezuela and Universidad La Laguna, Spain. Her clinical practice included work in a hospital environment, early childhood and psychological assessment-intervention.
With a number of publications, great experience in University teaching and professional practice in Psychology, her main area of interest was the preservation of the History of Psychology with an emphasis on the historical nature related to the Psychology program in Brazil, especially the state of São Paulo. She contributed, after three years of enormous reinforcements with the Ministry of Culture, to the legalization of the Project “The Legacy of Psychology for Human Development”, thanks to the contributions of the Academics themselves, complemented with the assistance of Vetor Psycho-Pedagogical Publishing House and the Regional Council of Psychology - 6th. Region. The final product consisted of a set of six DVDs that include twenty recordings and two explanatory books referring to the content of the interviews, with bibliographic indications of each author. It is an important material for future Psychology scholars in our areas. Professor Aidyl spent her last years actively working for the advancement of Psychology in Brazil, the São Paulo Academy of Psychology and this Bulletin. Our tribute is permeated with gratitude for the extraordinary person she was and for the legacy she left for all of us.
At this time, as part of this Editorial, it is important to present the content of this issue of the Bulletin, which begins with an article on theoretical and clinical assumptions of psychoanalytic psychodiagnosis. Written by Dr. Leila Salomão de La Plata Cury Tardivo, Professor at the Department of Clinical Psychology at the Institute of Psychology at the University of São Paulo, it discusses the concept of social suffering, which is related to people’s living conditions and has an intense impact, contributing to psychological suffering. Next, two articles discuss aspects related to the COVID-19 pandemic. In the first one, Lipp M. and Lipp, L, from IPCS in São Paulo, address the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the level of Stress, Mental Health and Values of the Human Being. Reflections are made on the fact that the pandemic has brought about profound changes in our society in the context of Education and physical and mental health, but also in a field that has not been much studied, which has to do with human values. The other article, written by Thiago de Almeida, also discusses the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, specifically in affective-sexual interpersonal relationships under confinement due to COVID-19. Sexuality is also discussed in the next article, by three authors from the Federal University of Sergipe, who address the issue of masculinity and sexual practices in men. Next, there are three interesting articles in the schooling area. One of them, collaboratively authored by Eduardo Ribeiro Frias, professor and researcher at Paulista University - UNIP, and Professor Marilene Proença Rebello de Souza, As an academic at USP, she discusses data from the thesis “School Success of Black Students in a Black Territory in São Paulo City” (Frias, 2020), with the objective of verifying the specificities that allowed black men and women to achieve academic success. Next, four professors from PUC in São Paulo, including academic prof. Maria Regina Maluf, present an analysis of the importance of the three components of fluency, in reading comprehension. The Federal University of Delta do Parnaíba/Parnaíba-PI also offers us another article in the area of schooling, included in this issue of the Bulletin. The authors analyzed 57,024 documents from the database of the School Management and Inspection Unit/UGIE of the State Department of Education/SEDUC with the aim of studying functional differences and Critical School Psychology, to carry out an analysis among students from the public school network in the state of Piauí. The research by Josefa Silvonei de Lima Gondim, from the University of Aveiro, and Nilton S. Formiga, from the Potiguar University/Laureate International Universities (Natal, RN.), discusses the evidence of association between the variables attitudes and recycling beliefs, satisfaction with the service provided, and the recycling habits. The last two articles included were sent from Paraná, one of which is authored by professors at Tuiuti University and discusses the important issue of difficulties in the process of family reintegration of children and adolescents victims of abuse and mistreatment sheltered in an institution. The other one, by Gabriela Drews Wayhs and Bruno Jardini Mäder, from Pequeno Príncipe Faculties, Curitiba, also refers to the area of adolescence, presenting a work on groups of adolescents in a Center for Psychosocial Attention (CAPS) for children and adolescents: an experience report from the perspective of a resident psychologist.
