Abstract

ANDRADE, Fernando Cézar Bezzera de. The desire of autonomy: illustration in a clinic case. Estud. psicanal. [online]. 2012, n.37, pp.53-62. ISSN 0100-3437.

In the context of Freud’s theory on narcissism and its revision by Laplanche’s theory, this article refers to the concept of “desire of autonomy” (MAIA, 1991, 1996, 1997) to discuss two fragments of a clinical case characterized by a masochistic defence. From the metapsychological point of view, it is argued that the desire for autonomy develops Laplanche’s review of the Freudian theory on narcissism, for bringing to light a denied principle of mental functioning, which (more parsimoniously than that the Freudian model of autoeroticism and of death drive) explains elements of narcissism, repetition and self-sufficiency in psychic formations. To examine this hypothesis and highlight the desire for autonomy, it is presented the working-through of the patient in relation to two fragments of the clinical case, a symptom and a dream, inferred from the abandonment of a high-risk behavior and a significant increase in willingness to establish bonds of love.
