Abstract

LISONDO, Alicia Beatriz Dorado de. The power of the truth: Secrets, lies, bleeding trauma in the film Incendies (2010), by Denis Villeneuve. Ide (São Paulo) [online]. 2015, vol.38, n.60, pp.67-82. ISSN 0101-3106.

The movie Incendies is interpreted in accordance to some important issues for psychoanalysis: questions about the origin; the power of the truth, the psychic transgenerational transmission (silence, secrets, non-elaborated mourning, the work of re-signification and re-construction of the history, the haven of the silence due to the pain and the unspeakable suffering). The author compares the relationship between Jocasta and Oedipus which was based on lies, and the one between Nawal and her lost baby, who was taken away from her womb. This baby, who suffered orphanhood, could only turn out to be someone in life as a torturer or a ruthless shooter. This mother leaves as her legacy the desire to live and to know what is true.

Keywords : Origin; Psychic transmission; Truth. Orphanhood; Re- signification.
