Abstract

THIERS, Valéria de Oliveira  and  CAPOVILLA, Fernando César. Judgment of translucency in augmentative and alternative symbol systems by undergraduate students. Aletheia [online]. 2006, n.24, pp.49-56. ISSN 1413-0394.

The paper describes the relative translucency judgment of nouns, verbs and modifiers in four Augmentative and Alternative Communication Systems (Blissymbolics, PIC, PCS, ImagoAnaVox) by means of software (Sonda) that presented the symbols and registered punctuation attributed, judgment time, and number of repetitions required. It was conducted an experiment with undergraduates naive to the communication symbols systems. They judged nouns as more iconical than verbs, and these ones as more iconical than modifiers, which suggests imageability effects of grammatical categories; also, Blissymbolics were judged as the least iconical Augmentative and Alternative Communication Systems.

Keywords : Iconicity; Translucency; Augmentative and alternative communication systems.
