This paper aims to draw a parallel between the expertise of Donald Schön, renowned masters and the graduate programs in performance in the Masters and Doctoral Academic Programs of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro School of Music. Based on this study, we consider skill of performance and acquisition of comprehensive repertoire as basic necessities for the professional competence of the musician. We also discuss the requirements of the academic programs of the aforementioned institution and their pertinence to the musician/piano teacher profile in contemporary society.
