^lpt^aEste artigo visa contribuir para o debate sobre alternativas metodológicas no estudo das representações sociais situando a discussão num contexto da pesquisa em psicologia social. Numa primeira parte, considera-se as opções metodológicas no estudo das representações sociais caracterizando as abordagens qualitativas e quantitativas. A discussão que se estende aos métodos da psicologia social aborda questões como: objetividade, controle, interpretação e explicação Numa segunda parte, particular atenção é dada à utilização do material textual (escrito ou proveniente da fala) enquanto indicador empírico das representações sociais. Discute-se o estatuto do material textual no contexto da análise do discurso. Conclui-se sobre a pertinência das opções metodológicas consideradas atreladas ao nível de conhecimento sobre a temática estudada, à questão de pesquisa e à sofisticação do modelo teórico utilizado^len^aThe present article aims at contributing to the debate on altemative methods for the study of social representation. First of ali, different options on the study of social representation are described and the qualitative and quantitative methods are differentiated. The discussion, including also social psychology methods, deals with: objectivity, control, interpretation and explanation. In the second part, particular attention is given to the usage of the textual material as an empirical indicator of social representation, and a distinction between the content analysis and discourse is presented. The appropriateness of each methodological choice must be seen as related to the levei of knowledge the theme studied, to the research goal and finally, to the complexity of the theoretical framework used
