CARONE, André Medina. Theory and narrative in the language of the Studies in Hysteria. Ide (São Paulo) [online]. 2007, vol.30, n.45, pp.20-23. ISSN 0101-3106.
Lucy R’s clinical case - the third presented in Studies in Hysteria - brings forward the slow overcoming of hypnosis and some theoretical changes proposed by Freud in a rather prudent language. As to the vocabulary, one notices the discreet appearance of the nouns “unconscious” and “interpretation” inside the theoretical frame of the “Preliminary Statement” modifying the initial assumptions of the book. On the narrative level, we find Freud dealing with an insecure young woman, unable to choose between recognizing her passion for the boss or respecting her moral duties. Her uncertainty seems reflected by the indecision of her own therapist who leaves the hypnotic therapy while paradoxically engaged in reassuring its meaning and value.
