MAGDALENO JUNIOR, Ronis. Better not to have been born?. Rev. bras. psicanál [online]. 2018, vol.52, n.1, pp.20-31. ISSN 0486-641X.

The author's purpose is to think about death from the psychoanalytic perspective. The author states that, in 1920,Freud created a conceptual problem by proposing the conflict between life and death drives. This problem was heavily based on an economic logic. When Lacan proposed the notion of "the unconscious structured as a language", he opened a new path for understanding the place of death in the clinical practice and in the phenomenon of transference. According to the author of this paper, in Psychoanalysis, death opposes both word and knowledge, because death constitutes a center that is filled with silence; a center around which life resists. The author presents two clinical vignettes in order to contextualize the theoretical path.

Palavras-chave : death; death drive; pleasure principle; compulsion.
