In the form of a historical review, this article narrates the use of art in hospital environments, reviewing the international beginnings of this practice in the 19th century. It greatly emphasizes the work of the Brazilian Doctor Osório Cesar in the Psychiatric Hospital of Juquery during the 1920s, and of Dr. Nise da Silveira, who founded the Image Museum of the Subconscious in Rio de Janeiro. Based on those historical reports, the article proposes the creation of art studios in hospitals: to coexist, in some cases as a technique, to calm the emotional condition of the interned and to assist in the response to medication and therapeutic success- among the countless benefits that art can bring
