BERNARDES, Wagner Siqueira. Science and religion. Epistemo-somática [online]. 2007, vol.4, n.1, pp.137-145. ISSN 1980-2005.

Science progress includes knowledge and power that were acquired by man with the aim to control the forces of nature and extract from it all the wealth for the satisfaction of his needs. Among the powers that may dispute the position of science, the only serious enemy is religion. It contains a system of illusions that ensures men protection, power and happiness. Science, however, may provide an illusion of omnipotence and omniscience and turn man into some kind of “prosthetic God”. However, notorious scientific progresses did not make men happier. The majority of benefits taken from science consist of “cheap enjoyments”. Human creations are quite fragile and science and technology, wich have built them, can also be used for their destruction.

Palavras-chave : Culture; Benefits; Illusion; Aggressive drive.
