Abstract

MATOS, Olgária Chain Féres. The many and the one: the half-caste logos and hospitality. Ide (São Paulo) [online]. 2008, vol.31, n.47, pp. 08-15. ISSN 0101-3106.

The aim of this essay is to indicate the ways in which, in politics, the metaphysical principle of identity translates into political fundamentalism and prejudice. Every origin, in itself, is half-caste, because it is mystical and mixed. Thus, from the estetical puritanism to religious fundamentalism to ethnic hatred operates an exclusion of the Other, the different, the contradictory, according to a logic of the evidence, of the uncontroverted. Recognizing the Other inside ourselves is to lodge a hybridand plural logos that translates into cosmopolitism and hospitality.

Keywords : Alterity; Cosmopolitism; Hospitality; Identity; Prejudice.
