Abstract

RIBEIRO, Alessandra Monachesi. The grotesque, the uncanny and the femininity within the work of Cindy Sherman. Ide (São Paulo) [online]. 2008, vol.31, n.47, pp. 88-93. ISSN 0101-3106.

The present article traces a route, from visual artist Cindy Sherman’s work, in which femininity is reconsidered outside the dichotomy commonly used to define both masculine and feminine fields linked up with the phallic / castrated logic. Through the artist’s trajectory, it’s possible to approach feminine to grotesque and, therefore, to uncanny, a psychoanalytical concept that points out to a borderland that escapes from being confined within the psychic and simbolic spheres. Therewith, femininity reveals itself as another way to subjectivation in our present times, as well as a subject to be carefully examined by the psychoanalytical field.

Keywords : Cindy Sherman; Cindy Sherman; Uncanny; Femininity; Grotesque; Psychoanalysis.
