Abstract

GODOY, Luciana Bertini. A letter: a space between two. Ide (São Paulo) [online]. 2010, vol.33, n.50, pp. 36-53. ISSN 0101-3106.

This article is dedicated to the rising of subjects that involve the study of letters, especially artists’ letters. It is derived from researches accomplished between 1993 and 2006 concerning the Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890), searching the delineation of the artist’s self-image in his correspondence. Considering the understanding of this correspondence as a oeuvre in itself, we will make some theoretical notes in two approaches: the investigation of the specific nature of the letter as a research object and the singularity of this kind of study; and the exam of the uses that have been done of Van Gogh’s correspondence to suggest interpretations of his life and work.

Keywords : Correspondence; Modern art; Van Gogh.
